4 Commando

4 Commando
History of the Unit

No.4 Commando was formed on 23rd June 1940 and ‘commenced operations’ on 15th July the same year. On 22nd July 1940 the first full parade of No. 4 Commando was held in the old pavilion on the sea front at Weymouth and it was taken by the newly appointed Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. P. Legard.

After initial training stints in Scotland during 1940 the Commando became a part of 3 Special Service Battalion, Lt Col Dudley Lister MC replacing Lt Col Legard as Commanding Officer. They reverted back to No. 4 Commando on 26th of February 1941.

There were originally 10 troops. After the change from Special Service Battalions to full Commando, they reduced to 6 troops 'A' through to 'F'.  After Normandy and before Walcheren a further change was made, and the troops were identified by number rather than letter. Early Operations included. 4th March 1941 ‘Claymore’ in the Lofoton Islands. 21/22nd April 1942 ‘Abercrombie’ at Hardelot Village.

No. 4 Commandos' task in the Dieppe raid on 19th August 1942 was to knock out the Gun Battery at Varengeville. Their success became a training book example of how to assault a static gun emplacement. Charismatic Commando leader Lt. Colonel The Lord Lovat was the C.O. for the two latter operations, Lt Col. Lister MC having now taken command of No.10 Commando. Losses at Dieppe were replaced by a fine entry of former police officers who were to win many Commandos’ respect for the high quality of men enlisted.

No 4’s Major Pat Porteus was awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in the operations. View the Dieppe Roll of Honour here [Dieppe ROH].

There then followed a period of intensive training. No. 4 was next in action in the allied invasion of North West Europe.

During the  Normandy operations two troops of French Commando’s from No.10 Inter-allied Commando were transferred to operate with No 4 Commando, thus allowing French Nationals to be first ashore on the liberation of their own country. D-Day objectives for No. 4 Commando were to be the liberation of Ouistreham and to relieve the Airborne Units who had captured the Orne bridges. This was in tandem with other Commando units. An incident which took place at this point has passed into Commando folk lore. Lt. Colonel The Lord Lovat apologised to the C. O. of the Airborne troops for arriving at the point of rendezvous several minutes LATE!!

The last operation for No.4 Commando was its succesful role in the landings and subsequent assault on Flushing during Operation Infatuate between the 1st and 8th November 1944.

In June 1945 No 3 Commando, along with No 6 Commando, were back in the UK preparing for the planned invasion of the Japanese mainland. No 4 Commando were still in Germany at Recklinghausen. At this time 233 OR's from No.4 Commando were posted to Nos. 3 and 6 Commandos, to bolster their numbers for the invasion, however Japan surrendered and the war ended.

In September 1945 with the war over, No.4 Commando, still in Germany, were reinforced by Officers and men, with high release numbers, from Army Commandos in England which had no operational role or commitments. No one knew that a decision had been made to disband the Army Commandos, and no official or public announcement had been made. (Source: Major Jimmy Dunning)

The Commando was later disbanded along with all the other Army Commandos.

Commando Association obituary by Henry Brown OBE.
"Much has already, and rightly, been recorded of Robert Dawson's tuly sterling service as a Troop and later the Commanding Officer of No. 4 Commando.
The men of this Commando Unit, both French and British,  at all times followed him willingly and with devotion, having full confidence in his wise and fearless leadership.
All were proud and privileged to serve under his command. One cannot adequately describe in words Robert Dawson's true worth to our Association, or the degree to which he will be greatly missed.
In particular, we shall treasure the memory of his two terms as an outstanding President, and the many years he served as a Trustee of the Commandos' Benevolent Fund.
Whenever we sought his wise counsel, which was often, this was always forthcoming and there was never any doubt that the opinions he so kindly expressed had originated only after much careful thought.
We will never forget his charm, kindness and understanding, and will always feel very privileged to have known him. We deeply mourn the passing of a very dear friend and comrade, and a very staunch supporter of our Commando cause.
Our very deep and sincere sympathy goes out to his dear widow, Jean and her lovely family, in the irreparable loss thet have sustained" [6].

4 Commando Nominal Roll

In 1946 the Army Council decided that the Army Commandos were to be disbanded and no provision was allowed or made for any depository or office which would have at least contained a complete Roster of Names of the men who served in the various units.

For historical & research purposes, we have tried to compile the names of all No.4 Commando volunteers which were obtained from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Lists of Casualties, the No.4 Commando War Diary, papers from the National Archives and further research by members of the CVA and various other resources. In preparing this list, we acknowledge that it is very likely there are omissions.

Note: Where a service number is shown on our nominal rolls and no source is shown in the end column, it should be treated as possible but not confirmed. Contact the Archive if you suspect an error.

PORTEOUS, Capt. Patrick Anthony, VC

Rank:
Captain
Unit / Base:
4 Commando
Regiment/Corps:
Royal Artillery
Service:
Army
Number:
73033
Honours & Awards:
Born:
Tuesday, January 1, 1918
Died :
Monday, October 9, 2000
Lieutenant (T/Captain) Patrick Anthony Porteous was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry during operations at Dieppe.

During the later Normandy landings he commanded 'D' troop of No 4 Commando. He held the war substantive rank of Captain and was confirmed in the rank on the 26th August 1945.(1)

Post war and after the Army Commandos were disbanded, he remained in military service with the Royal Artillery retiring as a Colonel on the 11th April 1970. (2)

Obituary published in Commando Association Newsletter 112.
On 10th October 2000, the Commando Association lost its last surviving Victoria Cross holder, namely Pat Porteous. Only a few weeks earlier, proudly sporting his Commando tie, Pat had the honour of representing all VC holders at that memorable parade held in London to celebrate HM The Queen Mother's 100th birthday. But even then, Pat was suffering from a long illness that had increasingly curtailed his many wide ranging activities and interests.

Surviving members of No.4 Commando will remember Pat as the fit young regular gunner officer who took over "D" Troop when the Commando was reorganised after the Lofoten Islands raid in 1941. He soon made his mark as a quiet, modest, yet capable leader who was respected as "The Skipper". Athough his Troop was not employed directly in the Dieppe Raid of August 1942, its members were deployed to bring up to strength those other troops selected for the operation, and Pat was selected by the CO., Lt. Col. The Lord Lovat, to act as Liaison Officer between the two Troops earmarked for the final bayonet assault on the German "Hess" battery.

In the event, this proved to be a sound and wise planning decision. Just prior to the final assault, Pat was shot at close range through the hand, the bullet then entering his upper arm. He closed with his assailant, disarmed him and killed him with his own bayonet, just as the German was taking aim at one of the Troop Sergeants, whose life was thus saved. During the final assault the two officers of  'F' Troop were killed and the Sergeant Major seriously wounded, but Pat Porteous, in the face of withering fire, dashed across open ground to rally and take command, leading the men in a successful charge on the enemy in the battery position. He was severely wounded for the second time, but continued in action until the last gun had been destroyed, when he eventually collapsed.

He was invested with his Victoria Cross by King George VI in October 1942, after recovering from his wounds. He returned to the command of 'D' Troop, which began to specialise in small boat raids. For a short time he was seconded to the Small Scale Raiding Force (62 Commando) and participated in raiding on the French coast in the winter preceding the invasion of Normandy. On 'D-Day', Pat landed with No.4 Commando and served with the Commando throughout the Normandy campaign, after which he joined Airborne Forces.

As a regular soldier he had a series of post-war postings at home and overseas, serving as a regimental artillery officer and in staff appointments, until he finally retired as a Colonel in 1970 at which time he was the only officer in the army with a VC. On retirement Pat readily supported the Association and successfully carried out two terms as President, firstly 1972 - 74 and subsequently 1987 - 88. In addition, he was for many years a Trustee of the Commandos' Benevolent Fund, latterly as Chairman, until in early 2000 his failing health forced him to resign.

At the funeral in his tiny parish church at Funtington, West Sussex, the Queen was represented by the Lord Lieutenant, and both the Commando Association and the Benevolent Fund were well represented in the large congregation, and appropriately, a party of 29th Field (Commando) Regiment RA., were pall-bearers resplendent with green berets. Most sincere condolences and deepest sympathy of all Association members were extended to Deirdre, Pat's wife and also to his family. With the passing of Colonel Pat Porteous VC., the Association has lost a modest, self-effacing and gallant comrade who was much respected by all who knew him."

PORTEOUS, Patrick Anthony. VC Citation

London Gazette entry 2 October 1942.
Lieutenant (T/Captain) Patrick Anthony Porteous,
Royal Regiment of Artillery & No. 4 Commando.

At Dieppe on the 19th August 1942, T/Captain Porteous was detailed to act as Liaison Officer between the two detachments whose task was to assault the heavy coast defence guns. In the initial assault T/Captain Porteous, working with the smaller of the two detachments, was shot at close range through the hand, the bullet passing through his palm and entering his upper arm. Undaunted, T/Captain Porteous closed with his assailant, succeeded in disarming him and killed him with his own bayonet thereby saving the life of a British Sergeant on whom the German had turned his aim.

In the meantime the larger detachment was held up, and the officer leading this detachment was killed and the Troop Sergeant- Major fell seriously wounded. Almost immediately afterwards the only other officer of the detachment was also killed. T/Captain Porteous, without hesitation and in the face of a withering fire, dashed across the open ground to take over the command of this detachment.

Rallying them, he led them in a charge which carried the German position at the point of the bayonet, and was severely wounded for the second time. Though shot through the thigh he continued to the final objective where he eventually collapsed from loss of blood after the last of the guns had been destroyed.
T/Captain Porteous's most gallant conduct, his brilliant leadership and tenacious devotion to a duty which was supplementary to the role originally assigned to him, was an inspiration to the whole detachment."
