Clifford Franks 4 Commando
Private Clifford Franks was wounded 6 June 1944 during operations at Normandy, France.
Extract from the Cheltenham Chronicle
"Within half an hour of his landing with a commando force on the coast of France on 'D' Day, Pte. Clifford Franks of 1 South House, Bath Road, Cheltenham, was severely wounded in the leg. He was returned to this country on Wednesday, and his wife being notified immediately she was able to visit him in hospital. Pte. Franks is now reported to be going on satisfactorily. He joined the local Territorial group before the war and was thus called up immediately on the outbreak of hostilities. He served with the Gloucestershire Regiment in France, was wounded in the retreat to Dunkirk, and after recovering volunteered for the Commandos when they were first formed. Pte. Franks, who is 24 years of age, was an attendant at the Lido before joining the Service".
