Troop Sergeant Major Dunning
James Dunning 1992
James Dunning was one of the original volunteers for No. 4 Commando. Promoted Troop Sergeant Major he took part in the Lofoten Islands and Dieppe raids  before being commissioned Second Lieutenant on the 22nd May 1943. He then served as an instructor at the Commando Basic Training Centre. After recuperating from a spinal injury in a night parachute descent he was appointed Adjutant at the Commando Cliff Climbing Centre in St Ives.
 
Post war Jimmy served with the Hampshire Regiment in Palestine and with the Independent Brigade in Korea. He joined 2 Para and served in Cyprus and Suez before retiring from the Army on 13 February 1958 whereupon he became a school teacher in Southampton.
 
The author of several renowned books on Commando history, and an active member of the Commando Association, Major Dunning served as their President during 1992 - 1993, and on their Committee. He was for many years a Trustee of the Commandos Benevolent Fund.
