Award Recommendation
Operation Jubilee, Dieppe Area 19th August 1942
Sgt. McCarthy was in charge of the section responsible, under Major Mills Roberts, for engaging the enemy Battery with frontal small arms fire. At a great personal risk Sgt McCarthy worked the bren gunners forward, making skilful use of ground, to almost point blank range of the enemy pillbox defences. All machine-guns were silenced and it was largely due to Sgt McCarthy's intelligent handling of his section, and personal example, that such excellent results were obtained [Recommended by Lieutenant Colonel Lord Lovat] [1a].
