6 Commando

History of the Unit

6 commando

No.6 Commando was formed on 23rd June 1940 under the command of Lt.Col T. Fetherstonehaugh. During the invasion threat of that year No.6 moved twice. First to Romney Marsh and then onto Brightlingsea Essex. Moving on again after a short while to Bristol and a spell of Landing Craft training was then undertaken at Milford Haven being transported there on the SS Malines.

Like all the other units No.6 was absorbed into the Special Service Battalion formations before being redesignated again as No 6 Commando in Feb1941. No 6 Comando raised a special troop for sea raiding using Folbot canoes (101 troop).

Chosen for Operation ‘Kitbag’ at Floro in Norway on 11th December 1941 proved a disappointment. The operation was aborted late into the planning stage. Half of the strength of No.12 Army Commando was also due to take part in this raid.

After this frustration No.6 finally saw action when it embarked to take part in ‘Operation Torch in’ November 1942. No.6 fought several critical actions during this campaign before being withdrawn back to the UK to prepare for ‘Overlord’. No .6 had the task of landing and advancing to the Orne bridges where it was to link up with other Commando units and relieve the airborne forces. By the evening of the first day a spectacular success had been recorded and the Commando was dug in at its objective.

Despite severe losses No.6 fought on across Europe eventually reaching Germany before returning home.

In June 1945 No 6 Commando, along with No 3 Commando, were back in the UK preparing for the planned invasion of the Japanese mainland. No 4 Commando were still in Germany at Recklinghausen. At this time 233 OR's from No.4 Commando were posted to Nos. 3 and 6 Commandos, to bolster their numbers for the invasion, however Japan surrendered and the war ended.

No 6 Commando was disbanded along with other wartime Commando units.  The war diary of No 6 Commando for the 19th November 1945 has the following entry "Order of the day from Brig. P. Young DSO. MC.  Commando officially disbanded."

6 Commando Nominal Roll

In 1946 the Army Council decided that the Army Commandos were to be disbanded and no provision was allowed or made for any depository or office which would have at least contained a complete Roster of Names of the men who served in the various units.

For historical & research purposes, we have tried to compile the names of all No.6 Commando volunteers which were obtained from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Lists of Casualties, the No.6 Commando War Diary, papers from the National Archives and further research by members of the CVA and various other resources. In preparing this list, we acknowledge that it is very likely there are omissions, Therefore, this is not a definitive list by any means, nor is it meant to be an official list, but it is the best we can do in an attempt to record all ranks by name who were part of No 6 Commando.  Research continues.

The No 6 Commando Nominal Roll is listed below in surname order.

Obituary in Commando Association newsletter 72

"We are indeed sad to have to report the death on October lst last, of Brigadier Derek Mills-Roberts, C.B.E., D.S.O., M.C., formerly Officer Commanding No. 6 Commando, also a Commander of the lst Commando Brigade, and during the periods 1949-50 and 1958-59, President of The Commando Association. The following are extracts from appreciations by Brigadier The Lord Lovat and Brigadier Peter Young :
Derek Mills-Roberts was one of our most successful Commando Ieaders in World War ll and will be remembered by friends and contemporaries as a Happy Warrior. While preserving at all times the discipline, tradition, and turnout of a guardsman, Mills-Roberts  typified the indomitable morale and resourcefulness of those hand picked willing men, drawn trom many regiments. Always ready to follow a good officer who led from the front, they cheerfully endorsed the principle that one volunteer was worth ten pressed men when shock troops were required to mount a hazardous operation. He took over No 6 Commando in North Africa when it had had a bad time, and by his leadership and sheer professional skill, turned it into a superb unit, winning the Distinguished Service Order.  A week after D-Day, though shot through the leg, he took over the 1st Commando Brigade, which he commanded in Normandy,  Holland and Germany until the end ol the war in Europe.  His exploits which won him a Bar to the DSO were too numerous to name here.  Old comrades will remember Derek as a fearless, kindly,  and simplehearted Commander,  who looked after his men and never let them down. He could be fierce with those who did not live up to his standards. But, if his men were somewhat in awe of him, they honoured him as a forthright and fearless leader".

Commissioned as a 2/Lt in 1939 he was serving in France as part of the BEF.   A veteran of Dunkirk, he was promoted 2/Lt to Lieutenant 3rd Jan 1941. After a brief spell with No 4 Commando before rejoining the Dorsets to take part in Operation Torch , he would volunteer for and join No 6 Commando whilst out in North Africa.

When Brig Derek Mills Roberts took command of the 1st Special Service Brigade at Normandy after Lord Lovat's wounding, he chose Tony Lewis to replace him as OC No 6 Commando.  Aged just 24 the then (Temp) Lt. Col. Lewis, whom Field Marshall Montgomery used to refer to as his "boy colonel",  led No 6 Commando in France and Germany, throughout the remainder of the war. He  was awarded a DSO for "gallant and distinguished services in NW Europe."  The French Government later awarded him the Croix de Guerre with palm.

Post war on the 1st June 1953 he was appointed MBE (Military Division) for setting up the Kenya National Service scheme.  At this time, and with the Army Commandos disbanded, his rank was no longer temporary,  and he was serving as a Major in the Dorsets. On the 2nd November 1960 he was promoted full Lieutenant Colonel. His military service ended when he retired from the Army as a Colonel on the 3rd April 1975.

His death was announced in Commando Association Newsletter 110 of March 2000. Henry Brown OBE, the Association National Secretary wrote:
"With very deep regret, the death on 21st January last, after a very long illness, is reported of Colonel A.D. (Tony) Lewis DSO,MBE.  An early wartime posting to No.4 Commando signalled Tony's intention to play an active part in special service and he later moved on to No.6 Commando taking part in its actions against enemy forces in Algeria and Tunisia during 1942/43. Not surprisingly, with his qualities of leadership, promotion to higher rank was soon forthcoming and he was promoted Lt. Col. and Commanding Officer of No6 Commando during the fighting in Normandy in June 1944. From there he took the Commando on its fierce encounters with the enemy in Holland and Germany, resulting in the award to him of the DSO.

There is no doubt that his resourcefulness, courage and morale, not forgetting his kindly understanding manner, endeared him to all those privileged to serve under his command. Tony Lewis, as he was so affectionately referred to by his commando comrades, continued serving for some years after the cessation of hostilities, and further distinguished himself as a Military Attache in several of our embassies overseas, for which he received the additional award of the MBE.  The Association has greatly treasured his very great interest in our activities, and will always remember with much pleasure his years during 1979-81 and again during 1988/89 as our President. In the passing away of Tony Lewis, the wartime commandos have lost a most important and valued comrade who was at all times a staunch supporter of our commando cause. Our love and deepest sympathy go out to his charming wife Polly and her family in their great family bereavement. HB "
