Fusilier John Service received a Mention in Despatches in recognition of gallant and distinguished service in North Africa (Battle of Steamroller Farm).

During the action between No.6 Commando and a Bn. of the Herman Goering Jaeger Regt. Pte Service's Section position was attacked by a party of enemy approximately 80 strong - finally they were 40 yards away when Pte. Service picked up the Bren Gun and fired it from the hip. The enemy advanced shouting 'Jaeger - Jaeger'. Pte. Service was standing hosepiping them with his Bren Gun and shouting back 'Commando - Commando'. He killed many Germans and set an example of high courage and esprit de couer to his Section.
