Maurice James McConville enlisted on 19 November 1931, civil occupation Clerk. During WW2 he volunteered for the Commandos and was attached to No.4 Commando* before embarking for the Middle East with No.7 Commando as part of Layforce. He was captured on 20 April 1941 during operations at Bardia, Libya (Operation Addition).
After the Italian Armistice on 12 September 1943 he and Cpl Howlett (No.7 Cdo), with Pte. J. Baker (No.7 Cdo), and Spr. Padgham (RE), made off in direction of the Allied Lines. They were recaptured at Palata on 18 October 1943.
