John Baker enlisted 15 March 1940, civil occupation Electrical Engineer. Volunteered for the Commandos and attached to No.7 Commando embarking for the Middle East (Layforce). Captured 20 April 1941 during operations at Bardia, Libya (Operation Addition).
After the Italian Armistice on 12 September 1943 he and Cpls Howlett and McConville (both No.7 Cdo), and Spr. Padgham (RE), made off in direction of the Allied Lines. Recaptured 18 October 1943.
