David Winser, known as 'Doc' Winser,  died during operations at Walcheren. Son of Comdr. Alfred Michael Winser, R.N. (Rtd.) and Elizabeth Marjorie Winser, of Hampstead, London. B.M. Scholar of Winchester and of Corpus Christi College, Oxford; rowed three years for Oxford; Newdigate Prize Winner.

David Winser rowed for Oxford and was in the winning boat in the boat race in 1937 after which he won a scholarship for Yale University. During the Blitz he was working at Charing Cross Hospital. After his medical training finished, he volunteered for the Commandos. He completed his Commando training at the CBTC at Achnacarry and became the Medical Officer for 48RM Commando. He was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry on D Day whilst tending to the wounded on the beaches. 

Having been injured in an accident he was sent to hospital but returned to 48RM Commando to take part in the landings on Walcheren during which he was killed in action. The Commando padre Revd. Wood went out to look for him after discovering that he was missing from his medical post. He found the body of Doc Winser and his medical orderly close to that of Captain Davies. All his medical equipment was strewn around and it is thought that he had been tending to Captain Davies when they were hit by a mortar shell.

Revd Wood described him as "One of the finest doctors I have ever known. He was only a year older than me, but I regarded him with something close to hero worship. He was just great; all of our men loved him. He was in every way estimable".
