Corporal Hewett was awarded the Military Cross in recognition of gallant and distinguished service in Afghanistan.

On 8 December 2006, Corporal Hewett’s section came under sustained small arms, rocket-propelled grenade and heavy machine gun fire, from multiple, well prepared enemy firing points. Had it not been for Hewett’s personal bravery and the selflessness of his actions, there is no doubt that the patrol would have sustained significant casualties. Hewett’s courage and personal example were exemplary.
