Sergeant Samuel Hewitt died in a canoeing accident during a training exercise.

He had been attached to the Amphibious School from the Commando School for two weeks' training with the Special Boat Wing. The accident occurred when his canoe capsized during a night exercise.  [Sources: AFM ROH / Globe and Laurel issue Mar-Apr 1952, p71.]
