William Baines joined the Metropolitan Police on 4 September 1939, warrant number 128100. He enlisted into the Royal Marines sometime in 1943. Corporal Baines served with 47RM Commando 'X' Troop during operations from Normandy to the Scheldt. Post war he re-joined the Metropolitan Police on 18 January 1946. Retired 13 June 1969 with the rank of Police Sergeant.
