Pte James Mather 50ME Commando
Private James Mather was reported missing 2 June 1941 during operations in Crete and later found to be a prisoner of war [1]. He had been imprisoned at Stalag 4C, a prisoner of war camp at Wistritz bei Teplitz, Sudetenland ( part of former Czechoslovakia) [2a]. He died shortly after his release in 1945 due to ill treatment whilst a prisoner [3]. Son of Thomas Henry and Agnes Mather, of Newton-le-Willows [1]
  • His brother also died in the war. 851729 Sergeant Kenneth Mather, 16 Defence Regiment R.A., died on 13 February 1942 aged 20. Remembered on the Singapore Memorial [1].
  • Three other brothers also served: Ernest Mather served as Captain, RHA in Western Desert and Normandy; Victor Mather served in submarines in the Pacific; Barry Mather served in Korean War 1950-52.
