Lieutenant (Acting Captain) Hubert Bray was awarded the Military Cross  in May 1940 for gallant and distinguished services whilst commanding the Carrier Platoon of the 2nd Dorsets involved in the defence of Festubert, France .
Captain Bray was one of the initial selected Officers on 5 July 1940 for the new No. 5 Commando, the Commando itself being formed on 18 July 1940. Captain Bray took command of No. 9 troop . An image in our gallery of a banknote is annotated with some names and ranks of 1 troop. The annotation there shows 'Major Bray MC'..

- 28 January 1950 promoted Major, Dorset Regt. .
- 13 November 1958 promoted Lieutenant Colonel, Devon/Dorsets .
- 8 April 1971 retires .
The death of " Lt. Colonel H.A.A. 'Oner' Bray MC (5 Cdo) of East Malling, Kent" was announced in Commando Association newsletter 60 issued March 1975.
