George Kemp 48RM Commando
Sergeant George Kemp, 'B' troop, was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry, leadership and undaunted devotion to duty during the assault on the Island of Walcheren [1][1a].
"At Westkapelle, throughout the day of 1 Nov, this NCO was conspicuous for his fearlessness, and his desire to come to close grips with the enemy. When his subsection landed in the first wave, he immediately gained control of it and led it forward under heavy shell-fire to its first objective. Later, when his troop was called upon at short notice to as battery W.13, he was conspicuous for the way he led his subsection directly at the core of the enemy resistance, and silenced, with bursts from his tommy gun and grenades, and LMG which was firing at the attacking troop. His example, leadership and dash contributed greatly to the success of the initial break-in to the fortified battery position." [Recommended by Lt Col. J. Moulton CO 48 RM Cdo.] [2].
