Able Seaman Dennis Thackray was killed in Italy. At the time of his death RN Commandos were involved in the operation to liberate the enemy held island of Elba, codenamed Operation Brassard.

Extract from the Yorkshire Evening Post (ROH p3) - Monday 17 June 1946

"Thackray - Years pass, but memories cling  of a dear brother, and uncle, Denis, R.N. Commandos, killed June 17, 1944. From Emma, Clive and Stanley."

Notes
The CWGC list his unit only as HMS Victory. This was a shore base in the UK responsible for accomodation and training. He was not serving there at the time of his death. It is this Archive's belief that he was involved in Operation Brassard but his Commando service needs to be verified through service record when available.
