Able Seaman Dennis Thackray died during operations at Elba [1][2]. At the time of his death RN Commandos were involved in the operation to liberate the enemy held island of Elba, codenamed Operation Brassard. The operation was launched from the liberated island of Corsica [3].

Notes
The CWGC list his unit only as HMS Victory. This was a shore base in the UK responsible for accomodation and training. He was not serving there at the time of his death. It is this Archive's belief that he was involved in Operation Brassard but his Commando service needs to be verified through service record when available.
