Able Seaman Dennis Thackray was killed in Italy. At the time of his death RN Commandos were involved in the operation to liberate the enemy held island of Elba, codenamed Operation Brassard.

"Thackray - Years pass, but memories cling of a dear brother, and uncle, Denis, R.N. Commandos, killed June 17, 1944. From Emma, Clive and Stanley." Sources CWGC Yorkshire Evening Post British Newspaper Archive (website britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk); The British Library Board. Notes The CWGC list his unit only as HMS Victory. This was a shore base in the UK responsible for accomodation and training. He was not serving there at the time of his death. It is this Archive's belief that he was involved in Operation Brassard but his Commando service needs to be verified through service record when available.Archive pages :
