Bombardier Alfred Child died at sea. There is a forum message relating to this which states "HMS Triumph (a submarine) was lost somewhere in the Aegean Sea in January 1942. No-one knows her position. She went down with all hands onboard including 2 Commando's, Corporals Clive Severn [view] and Alfred Child. Both are listed as serving with 1 SBS." Some documents are also posted there and state "presumed killed in action."

The detail above relating to both Corporals being in the SBS and on board HMS Triumph, lost in the Aegean, is in the book SBS in WW2 by G.B.Courtney. The author adds that he has been unable to find information about their mission.

Notes
  • The CWGC record him as No. 7 Commando, however accounts suggest he may have been attached to the SBS and on board HMS Triumph when she sank.
  • The RA Casualty card for Bdr Child shows Norway as the area of his death.
