Patrick John Thomas, a Post Office Labourer from London, enlisted into The Welch Regiment 4 April 1930. During WW2 he volunteered for Special Service and was attached to 50 Middle East Commando.  Private Thomas was reported missing between 25 and 28 February 1941 during operations on the occupied Greek island of Kastellorizo, later confirmed wounded (slight shrapnel wounds) and a prisoner of war since 27 February 1941. He escaped with two others from a train whilst being conveyed from Italy to Germany. Betrayed by local fascists in Venice and recaptured after seven weeks.
