Private James Blakeney was killed in action in Germany serving in 'A' Squadron, 1st Special Air Service. Son of James and Ada Blakeney, of Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire.
Formerly served in No.8 Commando having volunteered whilst serving in the Coldstream Guards. Embarked for the Middle East as part of Layforce. On 4 September 1941 he left the Commandos to join 'L' Detachment SAS Brigade. Captured 17 November 1941 during their first raid at Tmimi and Gazala in Libya (Operation Squatter), later escaping from Italian captivity making his way to Switzerland before repatriation to the UK in October 1944. Initially joined the 161st Recce Regiment before Lieutenant Colonel Paddy Mayne D.S.O., arranged his return to the SAS joining the Regiment on 4 January 1945. Remembered on the SAS Roll of Honour.
