Philip Macrae, a Gamekeeper from Eskadale, Invernesshire, enlisted into the Royal Artillery on 7 November 1939. After volunteering he was later attached to No.11 (Scottish) Commando and embarked with them for the Middle East as part of Layforce.

Henry Phillips enlisted into the Royal Fusiliers on 17 July 1940, civilian occupation Tunneller. He later volunteered for the Commandos and was part of Force X, a detachment of 4 Officers and some 60 OR's formed December 1940 from volunteers within 'B' Company No.1 Special Service Battalion.
