Philip Macrae, a Gamekeeper from Eskadale, Invernesshire, enlisted into the Royal Artillery on 7 November 1939. After volunteering he was later attached to No.11 (Scottish) Commando and embarked with them for the Middle East as part of Layforce.
Lance Bombardier Macrae was reported missing and a prisoner of war 19 November 1941 during operations in Libya (Operation Flipper). He was transported to Italy and remained in Italian captivity until 12 September 1943 when released by his captors from a working camp (farm work) at Pomaro after the Italian Armistice. With the help of local people he remained at liberty for the remainder of the war.
