John Robert McNeill, a Tool Fitter from County Durham, enlisted into the Royal Engineers on 23 April 1939. After volunteering he was attached to No.7 Commando which formed 'A' Bn., of Layforce during deployment to the Middle East. Sapper McNeill was reported missing after Operation Addition at Bardia, Libya, later confirmed captured 20 April 1941 and a prisoner of war. Made an unsuccessful attempt to escape with others whilst at Gavi Camp by tunneling before discovery by sentries.
