Henry Phillips enlisted into the Royal Fusiliers on 17 July 1940, civilian occupation Tunneller. He later volunteered for the Commandos and was part of Force X, a detachment of 4 Officers and some 60 OR's formed December 1940 from volunteers within 'B' Company No.1 Special Service Battalion. They trained at Gourock using Submarines and Folbots. After training the Force embarked from Greenwich joining a convoy for Malta. He was reported missing at sea later confirmed prisoner of war 31 July 1941 during an operation at the Gulf of Sirte (Sidra), Libya. By this time the short lived Special Service Battalion designation had reverted to Commando designations, in his case No.2 Commando.
