Marine Paul Howes received a Mention in Despatches for gallant and distinguished service in operations in Borneo Territories during the period 24th December 1963 to 23rd June 1964. He was wounded 20 February 1964 when ambushed by terrorists in Sarawak whilst checking identity cards in a border farmhouse with others from 42 Commando RM. During the ambush Corporal Reginald Chappell from West Bromwich was killed. Marines John Derick Balderstone from Callender, John Grant Finlay from Montrose, and one other as yet unknown, were also wounded. Fighting back the wounded inflicted casualties.
