BRAY, Thomas Garland

No 1 Commando
10 May 1939 enlisted.
Former trade on enlistment: Miner.
3 Sept. 1939 date service reckons from.
2 May 1940 No.2 Independent Company.
10 May 1940 embarked for N.W.E.F. (Norway) (Scissors Force).
11 June 1940 return to UK.
9 Nov. 1940 'A' Coy., No.1 Special Service Bn.
9 Feb. 1941 promoted War Substantive Corporal.


RQMS Ron Crippin 2 Commando
No 2 Commando
No 2 Independent Company
Ron Crippin, then a Corporal in the HQ troop, took part in Operation Chariot, the raid at St Nazaire. He embarked on motor launch ML 447 and was evacuated back to the UK.  He was awarded the British Empire Medal ( Military Division) "in recognition of distinguished services during the raid". (1)
  • He had previously seen action with 2 Ind. Coy., in May 1940 at Bodo, Norway, as part of Scissors Force. (2)

NIXON, Malvern

No 11 Commando
Private Malvern Nixon died when his jeep patrol was attacked whilst en route to harass the enemy in Southern Tunisia. He was serving with 1st SAS  ('B' Sqn.) at the time of his death having left the Commandos. He had previously served in No 2 Independent Company,  No 11 Commando, Layforce, the Middle East Commando, and 'L' Detachment SAS. 

TREVOR, Thomas Hoult (Lt Col)

No 1 Commando
No 2 Independent Company
Thomas Trevor was 2i/c of No 2 Independent Company when they sailed as part of Scissors Force (Operation Avonmouth) to take part in the Combined Operations raid on Norway. After this, with the disbandment of the Independent Companies, he joined the newly raised No 1 Commando.
