Marine Peter Raymond Jones 41 Commando
Marine Peter Jones, from Penarth, Wales, died during an amphibious operational landing from the USS Perch on the coast above Hungnam and west of Tanchon.
This raid was against enemy railway communications North East of Shako. The operation, the first by by a troop of the Commando, was to destroy an enemy railroad installation which they achieved in doing. However in a firefight that ensued when guards were alerted Mne. Jones was killed.  Later, at a solemn ceremony on board the USS Perch his body was committed to the deep with full military honours.
Marine Jones was awarded a posthumous Silver Star bestowed by the President of the United States of America. The Silver Star, along with the White Ensign that had covered his body, was presented to Marine Peter Jones's mother.
Citation extract
"For gallantry and intrepidity in action as a member of the Undersea Raiding Force assigned to an American Submarine in action against the forces of North Korea. His indomitable courage in exposing himself to dangerto protect his shipmates cost him his life, and served as an inspiration and example to all with whom he served. His every action was in keeping with the highest traditions of all fighting men." [Recommended by Commander Task Force Group, 96.9 (Commander US Submarine Division Thirty-One].
