Harold James Barber, a Carpenter/Joiner from Suffolk, enlisted into the Armed Forces on 24 June 1940. He later volunteered for commando service and was attached to No.2 Commando 5 Troop, 'B' Section, No.3 Sub-Section [1][2].
Private Barber was initially thought to have been killed in action during operations at Salerno, Italy, before confirmed a prisoner of war having been captured on 13 September 1943. He remained in captivity until liberated May 1945 [1][3][4][5].
