George Martin Sutherland, a Cooper from Hull, enlisted into the Armed Forces 15 November 1939 later volunteering for the commandos. Gunner Sutherland, No.7 Commando attached to Layforce, was reported missing later confirmed prisoner of war 20 April 1941 during an operation at Bardia, Cyrenaica, Libya. Escaped from Camp 54 in Italy 11 September 1943. Recaptured 6 days later.
