Captain Eric Roy Westley was in command of 3 troop during the attack on Le Plein, Normandy, where he was wounded, but rejoined the troop immediately after medical treatment in the field. The recipient of two Military Crosses for gallant and distinguished service. The first, after his capture on the 14 July 1943 during operations in Sicily, for his daring escape from a train whilst a prisoner of war being transported from Bologna to Germany; the second for his gallantry at Le Plein France in 1944.
Eric Roy Westley was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Royal Artillery 13 March 1942. Post war he was posted to the South Staffordshire Regiment on the 21st November 1945 and later resigned his commission on the 26th March 1951.
Recommendation for Bar to Military Cross
On 6 June 1944 in the attack on Le Plein this Officer was wounded in three places on the first assault, which failed. As soon as his wounds were dressed he rejoined his men, who inspired by this magnificent example of determination and gallantry, carried the village, killing some 15 Germans and taking approximately 50 prisoners. This Officer previously distinguished himself by escaping while a Prisoner of War from a train which was taking him from Bologna to Germany.
