Harold Kendray was a Middlesborough Police Officer who volunteered for the Commandos in 1942. He enlisted into the General Service Corps on 23 July 1942 and was taken on strength of the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry, joining the 2nd Police Intake. In September 1942 he was transferred administratively to the Black Watch and attached to No.3 Commando.
Embarked for overseas service February 1943 with deployments to Gibraltar and Algiers before the invasion of Sicily. Admitted to 11 General Hospital 24 August 1943. Discharged to No.3 Commando 9 September 1943.
Private Harold Kendray, No.3 Commando, was wounded 8 June 1944 (gun shot wound right knee) during operations at Normandy, France, and admitted to 17 Canadian General Hospital before being evacuated to the UK and admitted to the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary.
Posted Holding Operational Commando 9 October 1944. Re-joined No.3 Commando 3 November 1944 and embarked for overseas service in North West Europe 12 January 1945. Appointed Lance Corporal 5 January 1945; Corporal 1 April 1945; Lance Sergeant 20 April 1945. Relegated Class W/T Reserve 25 October 1945.
Post war member of the Commando Association from Thornaby Teesside. In 1939 he was 18 and an apprentice printer living with his family in Thornaby. His Father was a retired Police Inspector.

His brother 754420 Sergeant Leslie Kendray, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died on 4 October 1940, aged 20. Remembered with honour at Thornaby-On-Tees Cemetery [Source: CWGC].
