In 1939  Constable 84, John David Thomson, resided in the Police Billets, Albion Assembly Rooms, Norfolk Street, Tynemouth. He volunteered for the Commandos in 1942 and on 23 July 1942 was taken on strength of the 2nd Police Intake at the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry.
24.09.1942 posted No.12 Commando.
26.07.1943 posted No.1 Commando.
Nov.  1943 embarked for overseas service India.
21.01.1944 disembarked India.
31.01.1944 admitted C.I.M.H. at Kedagon. Transferred to 3 Indian British (Base) General Hospital, Poona.
27.04.1944 posted back to No.1 Commando.
19.06.1944 - 06.07.1944 granted War Leave.
26.08.1944 disembarked Ceylon.
15.09.1944 admitted to 54 Indian General Hospital. Struck off strength No.1 Commando.
10.02.1945 discharged hospital. Posted Holding Commando (Overseas).
26.03.1945 embarked Bombay for UK.
19.04.1945 posted Holding Operational Commando, Wrexham.
01.08.1945 released from military service.
