From Dagenham. Served in the Royal Marines from 1943 to 1955. During the war he served in the Far East including on HMS Tyne and HMS Phoebe. Post war service with 42 Commando in Malaya until 1947 and Palestine where on 30 June 1948 at the end of the British mandate he was chosen to lower the union flag in Haifa for the last time.
After military service he joined Durham County Constabulary in 1955. Moved to the Cleveland Force in 1974. Promoted from Police Inspector to Chief Inspector at Hartlepool in 1983, the rank he retired with in 1985.
