Marine Cousins was captured and a prisoner of war on 10 September 1943 during operations at Salerno, Italy.
William Thomas Cousins, a Typewriting Mechanic from Stepney, London, enlisted into the Royal Marines on 19 June 1941 and was posted to the 8th Battalion RM. He volunteered for the commandos in October 1942 when the 8th Battalion was disbanded and re-formed as 41RM Commando.
