William Thomas Cousins, a Typewriting Mechanic from Stepney, London, enlisted into the Royal Marines on 19 June 1941 and was posted to the 8th Battalion RM. Marine Cousins volunteered for commando service October 1942 when the 8th Battalion RM was disbanded and reformed as 41RM Commando. Marine Cousins was captured and a prisoner of war 10 September 1943 during operations at Salerno, Italy.
