In 1939 Edmund Burke was a Police Constable based at the Police Station in Rectory Lane, Woodstock. He volunteered for the Commandos in 1942 joining the 2nd Police Intake at the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry. On completion of his training Private Burke was attached to No.1 Commando. Post war member of the Commando Association with whom they lost contact.

15.10.1942 embarked for overseas service.
08.11.1942 disembarked North Africa (Operation Torch).

17.04.1943 discharged from hospital.
23.04.1943 2nd Echelon B.N.A.F. embarked for return UK.
02.05.1943 disembarked UK.
01.06.1943 permanently posted Commando Depot (C.B.T.C.), Achnacarry.
28.07.1945 struck off strength C.B.T.C. Medically examined. Posted 'Y' List E.
18.08.1945 relegated to W (T) Reserve.
