William Howson was a Police Officer residing with his wife in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. In 1942 he volunteered for the Commandos. Enlisted in the General Service Corps 23 July 1942 and taken on strength of the 2nd Police Intake, Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry. Posted to No.3 Commando 24 September 1942. 
Transferred to the Gordon Highlanders (1st London Scottish) 10 December 1943. Transferred July 1944 to the Corps of Military Police, Special Investigation Branch (69 Section). Released from military service 15 September 1946.
Possibly identical with Detective Chief Inspector William Howson, head of Lancaster Police CID who retired in 1975. Member of the Commando Association last known residing Morecambe, Lancashire.
