LSgt Challinton 2 Commando
Lance Sergeant William Challinton, 5 troop, was reported missing 28 March 1942 after the raid at St Nazaire, France, later found to be wounded and a prisoner of war. One of an assault party who disembarked from HMS Campbeltown, their role to destroy enemy coastal defence guns covering the dry dock area, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry. Enlisted 8 January 1921. Civilian employment - Millwright. Home - Ladywood, Birmingham [7].
