Corporal Stokes, 'X' Troop, 46RM Commando, was wounded at Beuzeville, France, and a prisoner of war from 28 August 1944 until April 1945 when he hid whilst the German guards evacuated the camp and moved the prisoners in the face of the advancing allied forces.
Samuel William Stokes, a Clerk from Smethwick, Birmingham, enlisted into the Royal Marines 22 January 1942. Married Dora Margaret Bullock in Bognor Regis, Sussex, September 1942. Joined 46RM Commando on or after its formation July/August 1943. Post war member of the Commando Association residing in the West Midlands.
