Sam Hooper 3 Commando
Police Constable Samuel Lyndon Hooper of the Cardiff City Police volunteered for commando service and enlisted 23 July 1942 joining the 2nd Police Intake to the Commando Depot, also known as the Commando Basic Training Centre, at Achnacarry. Private Hooper, 5 troop No.3 Commando, was reported missing 14 July 1943 during operations in Sicily, later found to be a prisoner of war. He escaped from captivity whilst in a working camp at Graz in February 1944 but was recaptured about 10 kilometres away. Private Hooper was liberated in May 1945 and later re-joined Cardiff City Police.
