Marine Richard Twigg , 41 Independent Commando, Royal Marines, aged 21, was awarded the Military Medal for gallant and distinguished service on 29 November 1950 in the Korean War during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. 
Extract from the Sunday Sun (Newcastle) newspaper
Published 20 May 1951: "Marine Richard Twigg, of Cockermouth, who has been awarded the Military Medal, volunteered to lie across the bonnet of a truck carrying wounded and give covering fire as they broke through an ambush. The truck got through and Twigg's bravery was instrumental in saving nine lives. Twigg, who is 21, volunteered when 18 years of age for service, although he was then reserved being a farm labourer".
