Fusilier Pickover, 5 Troop, was reported missing during operations on 19 August 1942 at Dieppe, France, later confirmed a prisoner of war. Liberated 1945.
Richard Pickover, a Weaver at County Brook Mill, Foulridge, enlisted into the Armed Forces on 15 February 1940. After volunteering in 1941 he was attached to No.3 Commando. Resided with his wife at 15 Turner Street, Barnoldswick. Prior to enlistment Richard was goalkeeper for Barnoldswick Town Football Club in the Lancashire Combination and also played for Burnley 'A' in the West Lancashire League. He was also an excellent swimmer.
