Phillip Arthur Russell from Oldham, Lancashire, enlisted into the Armed Forces 9 March 1936. During the war he volunteered for the commandos. Lance Corporal Russell, No.3 Commando, was reported missing 7 June 1944, confirmed a prisoner of war 8 June 1944, during operations at Sallanelles, Normandy.
