1988 commissioned into the Royal Marines. His early career included operational tours in the UK and overseas and with the United Nations. Early Commando units included Comacchio Group, 45 Commando, and 40 Commando. Later commanded 43 Commando FPGRM.

1996/7 Second in Command of 40 Commando's combined Alpha and Support Companies.

2002/3 commanded Delta Company, 40 Commando, during the invasion of Iraq (Op Telic 1).
