Matthew Ewing Donald, a Heat and Frost Engineer from Glasgow, enlisted 28 February 1940 into the Royal Marines. On 6 June 1944 Marine Donald, 45RM Commando, was captured and a prisoner of war near Caen, Normandy. In April 1945 when ordered to go on a forced march exit from the camp he hid in the camp until liberated by allied forces.
