Trooper Lewis Scanes was reported missing presumed died during operations in Burma on or shortly after 19 June 1942, his secondary unit shown simply as "Commando" on each of the casualty lists. Son of Henry Frederick and Mary Charlotte Scanes, of Dagenham, Essex.[1][2].
  • The Westminster Abbey Commando Roll of Honour lists his Unit as No.8 Commando [3].

Notes
  • No.8 Commando was sent to the Middle East forming 'B' Batallion of Layforce before being disbanded with some of the Commandos dispersing to specialist units including Mission 204 in the Far East.
  • The CWGC do not currently list him as Commando.
  • In three of the Casualty Lists above he is listed alongside CQMS Reginald Gillingham, 'B' Bn. Layforce, with the same date of death.
