Extract from the Hampstead News 19 July 1956
"The funeral took place at Golders Green Crematorium of Police Constable Leighton Ball, of St. John's Wood Police Station who died last week after a long illness. He leaves a widow and a three year old son. Six uniformed men carried the coffin in the presence of officers and men from both St. John's Wood and Albany Street Police Stations.
Pc Leighton Ball joined the police force after the war. He had served with the Royal Marine Commandos and was awarded the B.E.M. He became ill last December when he had been at St. John's Wood for nearly seven years. Since that time he had only been out of hospital for two or three short spells.
At St John's Wood Police Station this week Sgt Frank Williams said "It is an absolute tragedy. He always talked about coming back to work when he visited us from the hospital once or twice. He is a popular chap here. It is a bolt from the blue."
