Private Gelderd 1 Commando Brigade
John Gelderd was a Manchester City Police Officer who volunteered for the Commandos in 1942 and was posted to the 2nd Police Intake at the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry. His early commando service is not known but from at least June 1944 he was serving in the Administration Section of 1 Special Service (Commando) Brigade HQ. Active service included France and Germany. Released from military service 26 August 1945. In 1948 he was residing at Failsworth, Manchester.
Medals: 1939/45 Star; France and Germany Star; War Medal.
Police: April 1937 appointed Police Constable 2164 Manchester City Police; 23 July 1942 enlisted Armed Forces; September 1945 re-joined the Manchester City Police; 1954 promoted Police Sergeant; 1963 promoted Police Inspector; 1967 retired on pension.
