John William Barnard, a Soapmaker from Middlesex, enlisted into the Armed Forces on 15 November 1939 later volunteering for the commandos. Private Barnard embarked with No.7 Commando for operations in the Middle East, his commando forming 'A' Battalion of Layforce. He  was reported missing 20 April 1941 during operations at Cyrenaica (Bardia), subsequently confirmed a prisoner of war.  Escaped with many others from a camp in Italy on 9 September 1943 after the Italian Armistice but was recaptured by the Germans on 13 December 1943.
