Piper Jimmy Lawson 11 Commando
Jimmy was a Piper in the Gordon Highlanders. He volunteered immediately after the formation of No.11 Commando when Colonel Pedder was seeking a Piper. He did most of his training on the Isle of Arran and was billeted at Lamlash. Jimmy served in HQ Troop and embarked with No.11 Commando for the Middle East as part of Layforce. On 9 June 1941 he took part in the Litani River raid on this occasion armed with a rifle rather than his pipes. Their landing craft hit a rock and they were forced to disembark into 6 feet of water. When No.11 Commando was disbanded Jimmy went to 13th Corps Signals whilst awaiting transfer to the RASC. WW2 service 1939 to 1946. Recalled to service for Korea serving August 1950 to November 1951. Member of the Commando Asssociation from Kirkcaldy.
