Idwal Symonds, a Local Government Clerk from Caernarvon, Wales, enlisted into the Royal Marines on 27 April 1942. Marine Symonds, 46RM Commando, was captured and a prisoner of war 11 June 1944 during operations at Rots, Normandy. In April 1945 he escaped from camp at Westertimke into the woods when the Germans attempted to move the prisoners on a march to a new location.
